Nameserver
A nameserver (NS) is a DNS server that provides authoritative answers for a domain. Each domain typically has 2-4 nameservers; the registry stores them in the TLD zone, and they are visible in WHOIS/RDAP records. Changing nameservers transfers DNS hosting to a new provider — the most common reason to update them.

When a browser resolves example.com, it eventually queries the authoritative nameservers for that domain. Those nameservers — typically operated by a DNS provider like Cloudflare, AWS Route 53, or your registrar's DNS service — return the IP address records.
The nameservers themselves are listed in the parent zone (the .com zone for example.com) and are propagated globally as part of normal DNS. When you change nameservers at your registrar, the registrar updates the parent zone, which then propagates to DNS resolvers worldwide over 24-48 hours.
For domain monitoring, the nameserver field in WHOIS/RDAP can be a useful signal. A domain with no nameservers is in an unusual state (often newly registered or in transition). A domain whose nameservers point to a parking service may be flagged for sale.

How many nameservers does a domain need?
Most TLDs require at least 2. The DNS standard recommends 2-4. More than 6 is unusual.

In your registrar dashboard. Find the "Nameservers" section, replace the existing values with your new DNS provider's nameservers, save. Propagation takes 24-48 hours.
What happens if a domain has no nameservers?
The domain does not resolve in DNS. Common during the few hours after registration before nameservers are configured, and during nameserver migrations.
Can I run my own nameservers?
Yes, but most people use a managed DNS provider. Self-hosted nameservers require redundant infrastructure, anycast routing for performance, and operational expertise.
Are nameservers visible in WHOIS?
Yes. They are not redacted by GDPR — they are technical infrastructure data, not PII.
