gTLD
A gTLD (Generic Top-Level Domain) is a top-level domain that is not associated with a specific country. Examples include .com, .net, .org, .info, .io, .app, and the hundreds of new gTLDs introduced by ICANN since 2013. gTLDs are governed by ICANN policies and follow standardised lifecycle rules.
Also known as: Generic Top-Level Domain
In depth
The original gTLDs date to the 1980s: .com, .net, .org, .gov, .edu, .mil, .int. ICANN expanded the set incrementally — .biz, .info, .name in 2001; .pro, .museum, .aero, .coop in 2001-2002; .asia, .cat, .jobs, .mobi, .tel, .travel, .xxx through the 2000s.
In 2013 ICANN opened the New gTLD Program, which delegated hundreds of new extensions including .app, .dev, .blog, .shop, .tech, .online, .store, and many more. Each was awarded to a specific registry operator after a competitive process.
All gTLDs follow ICANN's baseline lifecycle policy: 45-day auto-renew grace, 30-day redemption, 5-day pendingDelete. Individual registries can add their own rules above this baseline (e.g. premium tiers, HSTS-only requirements for .app/.dev) but cannot modify the baseline.
For domain monitoring, gTLDs are the easiest TLDs to track because the lifecycle is predictable and well-documented. Status transitions follow the same pattern across all gTLDs.
Examples
- Legacy gTLDs: .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz.
- New gTLDs from the 2014+ rounds: .app, .dev, .blog, .tech, .store, .xyz.
- Restricted gTLDs: .pro (was professional verification), .gov (US government only), .edu (US accredited universities only).
Frequently asked questions
How is a gTLD different from a ccTLD?
gTLDs are global and ICANN-governed. ccTLDs are country-specific (.uk, .de, .fr, .us) and run by national registries with their own policies.
How many gTLDs exist?
Over 1,200 as of 2025, including the post-2013 new-gTLD-program TLDs. The original set was just 7.
Are all gTLDs equivalent for SEO?
Yes, mostly. Search engines treat new gTLDs equivalent to .com for ranking purposes. Brand recognition differs but is a perception issue, not a technical one.
Do all gTLDs follow the same lifecycle?
Yes — they share the ICANN baseline 45+30+5 model. Individual registries may add quirks (HSTS for .app/.dev, premium tiers, etc.) but the lifecycle phases are the same.
Can new gTLDs still be created?
Yes. ICANN runs periodic application rounds. The next round was scheduled to open in 2026.
